How To Build A Brand For Your Blog

Build a brand and you don’t have to look for articles related to “marketing” on Google.

Gone are the days when someone gets a newspaper to find news ; today, for each and everything, we have thousands of substitutes and alternates, online. So, you should give them a reason, why they should STILL be on your blog.

Have you noticed blogs like Seth’s blog, ZenHabits and such? They get tens of thousands of traffic each day even when they don’t post anything for a few days. Blogs with such a massive following no longer depend on the so-called ORGANIC traffic anymore. It’s all because, they have built a brand name for their blogs or maybe I should say, they are BRANDS themselves.

So, how to create such a name for your blog?

Don’t Confuse Them

You see, one of the most obvious reasons why readers follow blogs is, weblogs generally focus on a specific topic or niche (what we call it). In exception news blog cases, we are generally supposed to focus on a single topic.

Say, a reader read one of your blog posts on Writing Tips, if you can manage to attract the reader with your writing, he/she will definitely look for more such articles on your blog and imagine, how annoying that would be, if you also have “women health tips” on the same blog.

If you’re still wondering why-

Content Speaks

I’ve put the same quote on most of my blog posts and I think, I shouldn’t skip it here, too - Content is the king and you know it why.

When you have amazing content, you will of course, get amazing readership. Your writing style, choice of using words, ways of expression and moreover, the tips/reviews/whatever you’re writing does play the most vital role in creating a brand for your blog. Because, content is everything for a weblog.

If you notice, all big-daddy bloggers have their own way of writing and so should you.

So, start writing unique content that speaks and make it attractive; fruits follow you.

Stand Out

I know there are hundreds of amazing themes on the internet which suit your blog. If you want to be JUST ANOTHER, you can go ahead and pick the best one of them. But if you really want to make your blog stand out from the crowd, you must have your own customized site design.

If your blog runs on WordPress, it is most recommended to get Genesis Framework and create your own stunning child theme (you can hire a child theme developer either). Even my site uses Genesis and I, personally customized the child theme.

Oh boy! I missed the LOGO.

Logos and branding are so important. In a big part of the world, people cannot read French or English–but are great at remembering signs

Utilize Social Media

Social media presence and activism can really help you build a brand. There, you get a better reach and wider audience. The only thing you have to do is actively participate and use the best tactics to multiply the reach.

The best examples can be Starbucks, AXE, MTV, Walmart and many more. Each of them shave their own way of marketing and spreading their name.

Be Creative

Creativity, still has its own place and can help you- build a brand in the most efficient and effective ways.  Brainstorm and let the creative juices flow out. That’s it!

It’s your turn now; tell me, how to build a brand for your (or my) blog?

  1. I agree with all your points mentioned Koundeenya!

Speaking of myself, I think just being you and having your own voice is what makes you the real you, and hence that is what builds your brand or blog. You shouldn’t try to copy another or borrow their voice, which would only spoil things. And yes, don’t confuse your readers by straying from what your blog talks about. Instead, give them what they come looking for and much more if you can, through your comments I think.

Thanks for sharing these tips with us. :)

  3. Hi Koundeenya,

I loved this post because I love your style of writing. So much energy combined with great advice!

I appreciated the point you made about having a logo. This is something I’ve avoiding doing so far. I think it would definitely help with my brand building.

    Thank you.

    • Hello Hiten,

I too have used just a piece of text as my logo on my previous blog. I got to know about the importance of logo and realized how unique the logos of some blogs are. So, I come up with this one. I know, the current logo of this blog is not a full-fledged logo but I’ve something that no other blog has – a color changing scheme inside the text. I loved it.

Thanks for your words Hiten. So glad to hear that.

  4. Hi Koundeenya, you made some great points here! You’re absolutely right that your brand is important. A lot of bloggers miss that on their site, and it becomes a big mess of ads, sidebars, links and information you can’t process. I like the Genesis framework too – it’s what I’m using now and it’s one of the easier ones to customize. Your blog is nice too – clean and easy to read! Looking forward to reading more from you.

  6. Hey Koundeenya,

Ah, building our brand! That phrase use to confuse the heck out of me but you did a wonderful job of explaining it.

Don’t veer off to far writing about things that don’t follow suit with your niche. Like your suggestions here I’ve seen some people write about things that had nothing to do with the topic of their blog and a lot of people will find that so confusing usually never to return again because they aren’t consistent with their information.

I’ve also been taught to build a following before you start loading your site with ads. Heck, if they don’t know you they’re not going to buy from you so just wait and it will come.

Thanks for sharing this Koundeenya and you have a great weekend.

    • So true, Adrienne. People only buy if they find you trustworthy. Unless, we are planted deep with good readership and following, we can’t expect money to rain. But, with good efforts, one can slowly get following and loyal readers to the blog.

Personally, I loved customizing this theme for my site. I don’t want to be another sheep. I want to have a clean and an elegant theme. Hopefully, I got it by the end of the day.

  7. Hi Koundeenya

    Like your post.
I think we all take the time to find our voice and when people do I can go to their blog and recognize who they are. If they have a quest post and I don’t catch that happens to be the case and I start reading and it just does not sound like them. Sure enough, it is a quest blogger on the site. That is when you really know for sure that you actually have a brand…yourself in this case.

You are so right one needs to stay within the realm of their topic and one can swerve to the left or right of it. But as you say way off topic will turn your readers off and they won’t know what to think. It is like a little store trying to sell everything, you don’t know what they are. It is a clothing store, pet food store, grocery store or a hardware store. It makes no sense at all. Ran across a website just starting out and they were trying to have everything on the site and I just said no to linking with them.
